As the world celebrates
the first ever Global Health day which started in 1988 (World AIDS day), The
President of the National Health Students Association of Ghana, BMS Amoakohene
Frank, has raised serious concerns as to why resources are mainly only spent on
celebrating World AIDS day when it seems the world is gradually losing the
battle against HIV/AIDS on the face of the number of individuals catching the
infection every now and then.
“I really do appreciate the effort of
all stakeholders
over the years towards the course to combating HIV/AIDS but
I honestly don’t see the need why the world will spend huge sums of money on one day in the name of fighting HIV/AIDS and go back into hibernation until another year comes?"
Why is our focus only shifting to only 1st December as a day to fighting HIV/AIDS?

"Who said the
battle against AIDS is a one day affair? I can count the number of HIV/AIDS
events/Activities that took place within the year. Is that How Ebola
was defeated? Was there anything like Ebola Day? NO! Because every day was
Ebola Day and I expect that every day be a day to fight HIV/AIDS not just 1st
December."
“Why will we keep
Condoms, Test Kits and other resources and exhibit them mainly on 1st December
because it is world Aids Day. Condoms should be made available everyday
everywhere, Test Centers should be made available, and Media awareness should
be on every day. If possible, testing for HIV/AIDS should be made
compulsory for every individual if we really mean business in getting to Zero
as a Nation or as a world”. He stated.
These and many other
precautionary measures were shared by BMS Amoakohene Frank as he explained the
devastating effect of HIV/AIDS on the Socio-economic development of Ghana and
the world at Large.
